Learn How to Dig, Divide & Store Dahlias

Sunday, October 17th | 1:00–2:30 PM
Guiding Green Thumbs | Chatham, NY

Growing beautiful dahlias is only half the fun—learning how to successfully save them from year to year is the next step!

Join me for an in-person, hands-on lesson covering the entire process of digging, dividing, and storing dahlia tubers for winter. We’ll start in the field with a demonstration of how and when to properly dig your dahlia clumps, then walk through cleaning, identifying viable tubers, finding the eyes, and safely dividing a clump.

You’ll learn:

  • How to know when your dahlias are ready to dig

  • The best way to lift clumps while minimizing broken tubers

  • How to clean and prepare tubers for dividing and storage

  • How to identify the crown, neck, body, and eyes of a viable tuber

  • Step-by-step instruction and demonstration for dividing dahlia clumps

  • Which tubers to keep—and which ones to toss

  • Different winter storage methods and the pros and cons of each

  • What storage medium to use and how to pack your tubers

  • Ideal temperature and moisture conditions for winter storage

  • How to check your tubers throughout the winter and troubleshoot rot, mold, and shriveling

  • Tips for labeling and organizing your collection so spring planting doesn't become a mystery-solving exercise

  • Q & A

This workshop is designed for both newer dahlia growers and gardeners who have grown dahlias but want more confidence dividing and overwintering their own tubers.

Come dressed for the weather! We’ll work with real dahlia clumps so you can see the process from the ground all the way to winter storage.
